Dr. Helix Helix is a magical researcher attempting to unlock the mysteries of the forbidden Secret of Evolution. He is one of Aamon's subordinates, and works with Psaro in the pursuit of arcane knowledge.

Appearance and personality[edit]

The doctor is a wrecktor but does not carry the twin maces often seen with his kind. He is a devout scientist who has become famous in the world of magical study, so much so that even sorcery-inclined humans of Terrestria have heard of him with Toilen Trubble holding him in especially high regard. The doctor strictly performs his experiments alone, shooting down Toilen's offer to help on the spot, but he can be generous with people if they help him gather his materials, such as giving Psaro a spare communication device so he can keep the group informed at a distance.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince[edit]

After the defeat of Raph in the Lower Echelon of the Circle of Indulgence, a spectral projection of Aamon will appear in Rosehill Tower alongside his minion Furgil. After affirming that Psaro's goal really is to slay his father Randolfo and stating that he is too weak to do so yet, Aamon asks if he has ever heard of the Secret of Evolution before and informs him that his underling Dr. Helix Helix is conducting research on the phenomenon at his laboratory. The doctor explains the nature of the secret, detailing that it will allow Psaro to become a full-blooded monster at the cost of his humanity. He further states that unlocking the Secret of Evolution requires an incredible amount of magic and a millennium's worth of research, but that the fabled Sands of Time will greatly accelerate this process. Dr. Helix Helix gives Psaro a piece of indigo-coloured travelite to reach the Lower Echelon of the Circle of Caprice and asks the group to retrieve some penteractic crystal, the key ingredient for making both the sands and the Secret of Evolution, after which he will begin his work on deciphering the occult mechanism.

Later, after clearing the Middle Echelon of the Circle of Indulgence, the doctor will contact Psaro to return to his lab asap. There, Dr. Helix Helix utilizes the Secret of Transmutation to turn Healie into a human boy before the group's eyes. He states that the effect is only temporary, and that the Armlet of Transmutation will be vital to fully mastering the secret.

After the battle with Ludo in the Middle Echelon of the Circle of Conquest, Devlin bursts into Rosehill Tower to present the Armlet of Transmutation to Psaro. The minidemon proudly proclaims that he saw some other monsters try to half-inch it during an auction held in Endor and filched it himself on the spot. The armlet is presented to the doctor, who rewards Psaro with a piece of silver-coloured travelite.

Later, when Aamon's plan is exposed and he is defeated in his sanctum in the Upper Echelon of the Circle of Caprice, the pink-skinned demon robs the doctor to take the still-imperfect Armlet of Transmutation. Dr. Helix Helix will be furious at this betrayal when spoken to after, and when speaking to him after defeating the final boss he will mourn the loss of the Supreme Secret of Evolution. He will announce that his desire for knowledge has not been extinguished in the slightest, however, and that he will begin work at once on creating the "Surpassing Superlative Secret of Ultimate Evolution".

Considering that Aamon likely discovered the Secret of Evolution himself after conquering the elven kingdom of El Zetta in the distant past and would have been conducting his own experiments with penteractic crystals through his dominion over the Circle of Caprice, the doctor's research would have little to offer the demon. Indeed, Helix Hexlix's role in Aamon's plan seems to be that of an innocent patsy meant to unwittingly guide Psaro towards the secret and thus leave him vulnerable to being directly manipulated by Aamon.

Etymology[edit]

  • The doctor's name is a literal pun on the double helix molecular shape used by DNA strands.
