Counter

From Dragon Quest Wiki

Counter is an ability introduced in Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, being a classified as a skill or a spell depending on the game. The user counters the next physical attack made against it for a brief period.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker[edit]

Counter is a skill that costs 64 MP and allows a user to void the damage of one physical blow and strike back with a normal attack; it does not redirect the enemy's damage the same way that Bounce and Backdraft do with spells and breath attacks. It can be learned from:

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2[edit]

Counter can be learned from all the skillsets it could be previously, as well as from Battle Road Master for 56 points or from Missing lynx for 60 points. The traits counterstriker and counteractivist allow a monster to occasionally activate the skill and have it permanently activated, respectively.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D[edit]

Counter is now classified as a spell, costs only 32 MP, the effect duration lasts 4~7 turns, and now reflects all of an attempted assailant's damage as the physical equivalent to Bounce and Backdraft.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key[edit]

Monsters with Tension are able to ignore Counter's effect and damage the target, even if the attacker only has one level of Tension.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3[edit]

Tense monsters are still able to override the spell's effect, but the damage has been nerfed so that the blow is only at half strength. The name was also abbreviated from アタックカンタ to アタカンタ to better match Bounce's マホカンタ.

Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below[edit]

Counter is one of the moves that Velasco uses in his boss fight. If any character charges him while he is in this stance then they will be slammed with a counterattack.

Trivia[edit]

  • If one does not count spells that consume all of the user's MP like Magic Burst, then Counter was the most expensive ability in the series at the time of it's debut in 2006. It would not be dethroned until the ninth mainline game, in which the price of Fullheal would be inflated to 128 MP
