Hell's gatekeeper (Dragon Quest IX)

From Dragon Quest Wiki
For the headless flail-wielding monster of the same name, see Hell's gatekeeper.

The Hell's gatekeeper is a monster that appears exclusively in Dragon Quest IX. It is an immense beast from the depths of the underworld wielding a spiked club in its hand.

Characteristics[edit]

Hell's gatekeepers are huge quadrupedal beasts that were originally great statues, brought to life by demonic spirits possessing them. They have red skin with light yellow undersides and black tattoos on their upper bodies, along with a pair of bat-like wings. The monsters have solid, evil-looking eyes and a maw filled with long sharp teeth. They wear dark spiked armor on the lower halves of their body, along with a spiky skullcap on top of their heads. The gatekeepers wield wicked spiked clubs in the hands, which they use to dole out desperate attacks, and defend themselves with spiked bucklers on their offhand. They put their immense bulk to use to defend their weaker allies, though they are vulnerable to lightning and explosive magic. After being defeated, they have a chance to drop their demonic armaments. The fiendish beasts can only be encountered in the depths of the most dangerous volcanic grottoes.
