:Axe knight links here. For the monster referred to by the same name in later translations, see armored knight.
The axe knight (MadKnight / Mad Knight in later translations) is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series. Introduced in the original Dragon Quest, it is a bulky knight-like monster.

Characteristics
Wearing heavy, bulky armor and equipped with an axe and usually a shield, the axe knight is as impressive a physical force as its appearance lets on. In the original NES version of Dragon Quest it was armed only with an axe and faced to the right, likely to differentiate it some from related monsters.

The axe knight has been a boss in the majority of its appearances, a role it fills well.

Likely to be encountered after players confront the green dragon, and lacking the music vulnerability of the golem, it can be considered the strongest boss in the original Dragon Quest, ousted only by the obviously stronger final boss, the Dragonlord.
